Get help paying for care in a residential facility in North Carolina

Low-income adults 65 and older or adults with disabilities may qualify for a cash supplement to help pay for an adult care home.

The State and County Special Assistance for Adult Care Home Residents program provides a monthly cash supplement to help low-income individuals pay for room and board in a residential facility. Eligible facility types include adult care homes, family care homes, and group homes.

To be eligible, you must be age 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability, and reside in a residential facility that is approved for special assistance and has agreed to accept the state rate. Individuals who are eligible for Special Assistance are also automatically eligible for Medicaid.

Adult Care Home residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder may reside in a licensed Special Care Unit, which receives a different rate of assistance.
