Home Energy Rebates

Save money while making your home more energy-efficient

Home energy rebates help you get money back on home improvements that can make your home more energy efficient, comfortable, and help you save on utility costs in the long run. Some of these rebates are available as standard up front discounts on the equipment or installation costs, and other rebates are determined based on the type of work you want done.

Program Details

New York’s Empower+ program went live with expanded incentives and more funding in June 2024 to help New Yorkers afford home improvements that make homes more energy efficient, comfortable, and help households save on utility costs in the long run.

What can you get?

The original NY rebates include up to $5,000 back for moderate income households or up to $10,000 back for low income households to cover the costs of home upgrades including home insulation, air sealing to reduce drafts, energy efficient lighting, and replacement of inefficient refrigerator and freezer units. You can use this tool to check how much you’ll likely qualify for.

In addition to that incentive, the NEW rebates expand what projects are covered and how much you can get back on the cost. These rebates include an additional $1,600 for air sealing, insulation, and ventilation, $2,500 for electrical wiring upgrades, $4,000 for electric panel upgrades, $1,750 for heat pump water heaters, and $8,000 for heat pumps.

There will likely be additional rebates for energy efficient appliances available later in 2024. We’ll let you know when those are available in NY.

Who is eligible?

How much you can qualify for depends on what county you live in, your income, and how many people live in your household. New York has a tool you can use to check what you likely qualify for here. You should apply to Empower+ to be sure.

How to apply

The first step to getting home upgrade rebates in New York is to apply for Empower+. A program contractor from Empower+ will then reach out, typically within a week, to schedule a home energy assessment of your home and to answer any questions you have about the program. In this home energy assessment, a vetted expert will come to your house and look at your heating and cooling units, lighting, and electric panels. At the end, they will recommend upgrades that could make your home more energy efficient and save you money on utility bills in the long run. They’ll also share information about rebates that are available for each type of upgrade they are recommending. The Empower+ application and assessment is completely free and you don’t have to commit to buying anything at this time.

After the assessment, you will have time to decide which projects you want to move forward with. You can get in touch with one of New York’s vetted contractors to get a quote and see how much each project will cost you after applying the rebates.
