Why did you create Percent Off? And why should I use it?

Some of our family members were experiencing financial hardship, and we wanted to create a reliable way for our loved ones to save money.

Coupons didn't work, because codes flickered on and off like Christmas tree lights. Credit cards weren't a fit either - rewards in different categories were either too limiting, or too complicated.

The result is Percent Off. By paying with a gift card instead of a credit or debit card, you'll get a meaningful discount every time you shop. No gimmicks or gotchas, just dependable savings. It's been really helpful for our family members, and we hope it's valuable for you too!

What steps are required to set up my Percent Off account?

You'll need four things to complete your account setup:

A verified phone number. We'll ask for your 10-digit (US-only) phone number whenever you login, and we'll send you a verification code via text.
A valid email address. We don't do spam. We do, however, send you email confirmations when you add funds or purchase gift cards. Hence the email requirement.
A purchase PIN. You'll select a 4-digit PIN, and we'll ask you to confirm it before every transaction. It's a little annoying at times, but it helps keep your money safe.
An account balance of greater than $0. In order to create a gift card, you'll first need to add funds with Zelle®. You can top up for every purchase, or add a larger amount and spend it down over time.

Why do stores give discounts to people who buy with gift cards? What's the catch?

No catch (Seriously). Gift cards help business owners reduce their fees, so they offer discounts in exchange.

Consider: When someone buys with a credit or debit card, stores typically pay Visa or Mastercard a 2-3% processing fee. Merchants also have to worry about fraud, returns, chargebacks, and other fees that come with failed transactions.

In contrast, gift cards are effectively cash. The merchant receives payment as soon as the card is created, and they avoid the many challenges described above. All of this translates to more savings for you in Percent Off!

How many stores offer discounts in Percent Off?

More than 300 stores are currently available, and we're adding new brands every month! If you want to browse the full catalog, just tap "View All Stores" on the Home page. We also welcome suggestions for stores that you'd like to see in the app.

Can I send the gift card I purchased to someone else?

Absolutely. When you create a gift card in Percent Off, you can view its unique URL at any time—from the Cards screen in the app, or from your email receipt. This way you can shop for yourself, or share with a friend. Just remember that once the gift card balance is spent, it's spent.

What is Zelle®, and why is it the only payment option in Percent Off?

Zelle® is an easy way to send money to people and businesses that you trust, and if you bank online, then it's probably in your banking app already. Feel free to visit zellepay.com for more information.

In terms of Zelle® and Percent Off, we use it because it's fast and free. Unlike credit and debit cards, which have behind-the-scenes processing fees, there's no fee to send or receive money with Zelle®. In Percent Off, we turn this into more savings for you!

We recognize that credit and debit cards may be more convenient than Zelle® in some cases. However: our goal is saving you money, and that means eliminating fees wherever we can.

Is it safe to use Zelle® in Percent Off?

It's definitely safe, as long as you're transacting with individuals and businesses that you trust. At Percent Off we recognize that we need to earn that trust, and this translates to a number of key features in the app:

Viewing your Zelle® activity. We make it easy to review all the funds you've added to Percent Off. Each transaction also includes a reference number (a.k.a. "memo") that's unique to you.
Returning unspent funds to your bank account. If you have a positive balance in Percent Off, you can send it back at any time—just contact support. Gift card sales are final, but we're always happy to return any unspent funds.

In all cases, we recommend adding a small amount (like $5.00) to Percent Off initially, and buying a gift card to see how the app works. You can also read about Zelle® safety on the official Zelle® website. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

When I add funds with Zelle®, how quickly does the money appear in my account?

Funds that you add with Zelle® typically arrive in ~1-2 minutes. However, it can take up to 1 business day in the following scenarios:

Your Zelle® transaction doesn't include the unique memo that we generate in the app.
Your bank takes longer than normal to review the Zelle® transaction.

In both cases your funds are safely on their way, and we'll notify you once they're added to your Percent Off account. If you have questions about a specific transaction, please send us a message!

Should I use Zelle® with my banking app or the Zelle® app?

In order to add funds to your Percent Off account, you need to use Zelle® with your banking app. This is a requirement for all Zelle® transactions between individuals and registered businesses.
